About Us

Crashmat was founded in 2008 by Bec Smith.  Inspired by her year seven Textiles teacher, a young Bec realised that her own future laid in creative design.  She began by making wedding dresses throughout her high school years, becoming the youngest ever designer to enter the Australian Gown of Year competition at the age of sixteen.  Bec went on to study Fashion Design at RMIT before embarking upon a career in the fashion apparel industry.  After working as a fashion designer, product developer and buyer for over a decade, Bec took a creative leap and ventured out on her own to establish the innovative Crashmat range, becoming an Australian success story in the process.

Bec began by reinventing the humble bean bag; taking the 1969 icon of fun and comfort to a whole new level of stylish form and function.  By recognising that homeware styles are often several seasons behind those of apparel, Bec identified an opportunity to create a fashion forward range of products.  By combining pops of bright colour and geometric patterns with outstanding quality, the Crashmat range makes a happy addition to any home or office.

When Bec is not busy creating the stunning Crashmat range, she can be found indulging in a number of other passions.  She draws inspiration by keeping abreast of the latest international fashion trends.   Bec enjoys honing her Muay Thai martial arts skills and joining her husband on culinary explorations of their hometown, Melbourne.
